Know the rules of the game

It may seem very trivial to many people but simply knowing the rules of the game is an area that many poker players don’t even bother win. The rules of poker differ somewhat and they certainly differ from game to game with huge differences in how various forms of poker are conducted. For example I have run across many players who struggle when moving across from say no limit hold’em to Omaha based on the fact that in Omaha then you have to use two cards in your hand and three from the board. The evolution of an online poker player

I have been playing less online poker of late at www.pokerstars.co.uk  but this is something that I am going to correct this year. Regular followers of my blogs and my ramblings will know that I have been spending more and more time last year trading on the betting exchanges. This can be very difficult especially in the week where there is less mug money available. There is a far greater percentage of professional money on the exchanges in midweek and that constitutes a problem for any trader looking to try and make money. Read more

The art of the bluff

Ask most people what poker, or for that matter, card games are all about, and most of them will tell you it’s all about bluffing. The trouble with bluffing though is that it is very difficult to repeatedly pull off and it is high risk.

On the other hand ask any poker player or those looking at Blackberry casinos what creates the biggest adrenaline rush at the tables and most, if not all will reply with an anecdote about how they managed to pull off a huge bluff. There is more to the bluff than first meets the eye though. It is almost never a random play forced through out of a macho sense of bravado (these bluffs tend to be the unsuccessful ones).

A bluff, when done properly, is actually not as risky as most people would assume. There are factors which you can use to your advantage to increase the chances of your bluff being successful.

To state the obvious, the best time to bluff is when you believe the entire table has weak hands. Position is important when considering a bluff. If you are under the gun (first to act after the blinds) then it is generally not considered a good move to bluff.

There are too many players who are yet to act; therefore you have no information on them. Therefore a later position will more often be a better one to try a bluff. But be warned; as this is common poker strategy, players may see straight through your play and your bluff might be snuffed out.

The style of the players on your table should factor into your attempted bluff. A tight player who has played a small number of pots will be easier to bluff than a player who is loose and free with his chips. But if you attempt a bluff on a tighter player and they come back at you with a re-raise, you can be fairly sure that they have you beat. Or that they are good enough to have picked up on your bluff.

For a bluff to be successful, you need to have picked up a good read on your opponent’s range of hands. If you have no idea what you are facing, a bluff is virtually impossible, but if you are confident that you can narrow down your opponent’s hand then you are in with a shot.

The Professional Poker Player

Poker may not be a sport but the players who choose the game as a way to pay the bills have the title Professional Poker Player as their job description. By the very definition of the name, the players must act professionally if they are going to make a profit in a game that is getting increasingly more difficult to prosper.

The professional Texas Holdem poker player has a variety of different goals and many of them are money orientated, but there is still a drive to be the very best in the business. Daniel Negreanu starts each year by setting a series of ten poker related goals and 2012 has been no exception. Goal number three on the Canadian’s wish list is to regain the top spot as the all-time money earner – a spot currently being kept warm by Erik Seidel. Maybe the all-time money list is an accurate portrayal of who the best in the business are? Maybe or maybe not but the list is deemed important enough to be turned into a goal for Kid Poker.

Goal number eight simply reads: to have a better year than Jason Mercier. This is an indication from Negreanu that he believes Mercier is the standard bearer in live tournament poker. Interestingly, Mercier will move to the top of the Epic Poker League (EPL) rankings in the next few weeks, so maybe the EPL is the latest way of keeping score in the world of poker? You would think so except Mr. Negreanu doesn’t count a listing on there as one of his ten goals for 2012!

So who is the very best in the business? That’s a tough one, but you can certainly count Erik Seidel, Jason Mercier and Kid Poker himself as three of the elite.

Amateur poker mistakes

There are some mistakes that lots of amateur/beginner poker players carry out which can easily be avoided.

Most starting players, even those at Mansion Casino Online, will play too many hands because they want to be involved in the game – and that’s perfectly understandable. The thing about this is that it will cost you a lot of money at a time in your game where you are at most risk from more experienced players.

The Australian Poker Hall of Fame

It is January and the travelling poker circus has just pulled into Melbourne Australia and that can only mean one thing – The Aussie Millions.

In 2009, during the festivities of the Aussie Millions, the Australian Poker Hall of Fame (APHOF) was launched, to laud praise on the poker players who have contributed in a special way to this great game of ours in Australia.

The APHOF already includes luminaries such as Joe Hachem, Jeff Lisandro and Mel Judah and joining that great bunch of players is David Gorr and Jason Gray. Gorr has been involved in the game for years and would be the first to admit his title of veteran is a suitable one. The Crown regular is best known for his amazing achievement at the 2011 Aussie Millions when he took down the event and $2 million in prize money. That win placed Gorr into fourth place in the all-time Australian money list. Fans of www.betfair.com will be keeping a close eye on things.

Gray, on the other hand, has amassed over $1.1 million in live tournament earnings. Included in this haul are victories at the $25k Victorian Championships held in 2007, a third place finish in the 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Omaha Hi-Lo Split event and securing a runner-up spot at the Asian Poker Pacific (APPT) Sydney Grand Final the same year. Those looking at Betfair Free Poker will be impressed.

In order to qualify for the APHOF you must be a current or former resident of either Australia or New Zealand, demonstrated outstanding and extended service to the game bringing credit to Australian Casino Tournament Poker, and/or having displayed significant player excellence.

Pokerroom is back with a bang

One of the old favourites in online poker is back with a bang this year and that is Pokerroom which was one of the most popular online card rooms a few years ago. I think as a ten year industry pro then it is important to have a selection of solid poker sites to play poker at. This is especially the case with cash poker games because if you are playing at serious levels then the regs at these levels will quickly get to know you and adjust. This is not good news for your earn rate because I have known many online pro’s whose earn rates have fallen the longer that they stayed on a certain site. Read more
